Re: New pics of Stormy the Savannah monitor
Thanks guys. Zak she is about 22-24 inches long right now, and was about 6-8 inches shorter when I got her the first part of November 2010. She has grown a lot since I got her and continues to grow like a weed.

Do you guys have something about looking at a pretty girl soaking in the tub?
She's a beauty! What's the average adult length on the Savannahs?

Re: New pics of Stormy the Savannah monitor
Tandy, the savannahs average 2.5 to 3.5 feet long, with some getting as long as 4 to 4.5 feet. Usually the males tend to get longer and larger than the females. Zak, her temperament varies, some times she will huff and hiss and charge at me when I reach my gloved hands in the cage to get her out, and when she is in the bathtub in warm water she is as calm and easy going as a puppy dog. She will let me scratch and pet her, and she will even lay in my hand and fall asleep. She tends to be territorial in her cage and in the feeding tub, but is okay other places. That is just part of owning monitors, they don't ever truly become 100% tame, they just put up with us on occasion and behave good when they want to.

Re: New pics of Stormy the Savannah monitor
Definitely Zak, monitors are really cool lizards. They are my favorite lizard and reptile of them all. I really like them because they have a dinosaur like appearance, and I have loved dinosaurs since I was a kid. I am planning to get a red ackie monitor/ ridge tailed monitor in a couple of months, and I will post pics once I get it.

Cool. Ya post pics once you get them. My son loves dinosaurs and he also likes lizards. He saw a good sized nile monitor and told me he's going to get one one day.

Re: New pics of Stormy the Savannah monitor
Zak, if you or your son want one of the larger monitors, I would get a hatchling Asian water monitor and raise it up, the asian water monitors (varanus salvator) can become very good captives with proper care, even getting as big as they do. Whereas the nile monitors tend to almost always stay defensive and have bad attitudes, and get fairly large as well. The niles are cool, but don't make good pets.

Cool ill look into those. I've always heard that about niles. This kid loves lizards of any kind. I would like to get him something when he gets older.

Re: New pics of Stormy the Savannah monitor
Zak, if you really want a cool monitor lizard for your son when he gets older you really cannot go wrong with an ackie monitor. I know they are a little pricey, (red-$250-$300, yellow-$150-$200)but they are good monitors for kids. They stay small, reds get 24-30 inches and yellow 15-24 inches. They have good attitudes and rarely bite or even try to for that matter, in fact they are calm enough that some people even hand feed them. They don't require large cages, an adult pair can be kept in a 4x2x2 foot cage. They don't have special diets. They eat crickets, mealworms, and as adults can eat pinky mice and supplemented ground turkey. That is why I am getting one ASAP. The price and my wife knowing what the cost is, are the only reasons I don't already have one.
