Winter tortoise picture
If you look real hard through the screen mesh and the log and about 8 inches of dirt you can see them.
I miss them ......they have been there since the end of september.

Re: Winter tortoise picture
When I had Russians outside they would only bury up an inch or two. A stiff breeze would almost uncover them. I never lost one, though, even in the record cold of 1989.

Re: Winter tortoise picture
They had a little help from me. Prior to them digging in I had roto-tilled the heck out of their pen. This is their first winter outside and I was a little nevous about that. So I made the soil as loose as I could.

When I came home for lunch today, the male russian was out and 1 of the females was still digging her way out. She is hard to see under the log.......she looks like a moving dirt clod.

Re: Winter tortoise picture
mine are still under ground. i wonder if i should try and dig them up? any thoughts on this?
Re: Winter tortoise picture
If you do dig them up to check on them, they say to not let them get back below 50 degrees. Hydrate them right away by soaking, and start offering food.
If your tortoise bed does not recieve sun most of the day.....maybe they are still cool and slow getting up.
