How I Raise Hissing Cockroaches.
I follow basically the same directions as Dubia Roach care, cept I have found that Hissers enjoy more horizontal space, instead of vertical space. Therefore I use a horizontal rubbermaid tub.
I use damp moss for substrate, but have noticed that gnats like to breed in it also.
I use water crystals, which I buy from a local green house for water and I feed a assortment of veggies and high protein cat food which the roaches seem to love. I have noticed that Carrots are like crack to hissers, and when I feed any type of citrus the activity in the colony picks up and the females tend to breed more frequently.
I try to keep the humidity at 80% and the temps in the 75f to 80F. Of course lower temps slow down breeding.
I spread petrolum jelly around the inside edge of the container, about 2-3 in's wide to keep the hissers from escaping.
This is my basic guide for Hissers, they are extremely easy to breed and basically maintance free once setup. I've experiment with different substrates, like wheat bran. but it molds fast due to the high humidity requirements. I'm looking forward to how other people breed them.

Yes, it does work well. And you can easily remove it with dishsoap if needed. Plus, it seems that they know it's there and avoid it after their first encounter.

Re: How I Raise Hissing Cockroaches.
agreed about the vaseline. however, on my last order or hissers i also added an ounce of the "bug stop" barrier. i have been using that also and it works real well. to me, vaseline has an odor i don't care for. the bug stop doesn't have an odor that i can tell.

What is the Bug Stop product made out of? I use pure petrolum jelly that has no smell that I can detect. Of course I'm not sniffing the stuff either.

Re: How I Raise Hissing Cockroaches.
it's only a problem if it starts effecting my drinking habits.....
seriously though, you don't think vaseline has a smell? it stinks.

Cameron, what type of containers are you keeping your Hissers in? I'm about to upgrade to the largest horizontal tub I can find. My colony is exploding!
