not to open some can of worms, but my dad spent some time west and told me that "mountain boomer" referred to the gila monster.

Re: Mountain Boomer at Mt Scott yesterday
Hi Barry,
There are probably several species of herps around that have been labeled/nicknamed "Mountain Boomer", but the Collared Lizard (Oklahoma's state reptile) has also been called "Mountain Boomer" by many Okies for as long as I can remember, and I'm sad to say, that's a long time....
The Horned Lizard is another example. Many of us Okies call them "Horny Toads". (Talk about a questionable nickname..... )

Well, calling them Horny Toads is better than calling them "Texas Horned Lizards," IMHO! Those darned Texans are always trying to take things over . . .
The color on that Mountain Boomer is absolutely beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing such great pics!

Even though they're the state reptile, it's legal to hunt/collect them as long as you follow all of the regulations outlined above.

They have been called maountain boomers in Oklahoma since people first came here. People would hear loud animal noises from the hills and blamed these lizards for it.

Yep, that's true. Even though they can't boom, they are pretty amazing lizards!
