Russian's
Here are some pics of my Russian tortoise herd. I have one male and three females. If you don't know about Russian tortoises, they are awesome little tortoises with funny little personalities.
their enclosure...
again, who needs a hairy smelly dog????

Thanks for the kind words everyone!
I do keep them outside year round. They are in the middle of a dirt nap right now. I am, however considering keeping them up this next winter. I really miss those little guys. I am a member on a tortoise forum (tortoiseforum.org) and several people there do not hibernate theirs and still get great breeding results. We will see how things go this spring. If I can't get them to breed or produce any eggs with them hibernating then I will more than likely keep them up next winter....
Re: Russian's
Have they ever come face to face with your sulcata?

no they haven't. Mr. T is pretty territorial and would probably just smash them.
Re: Russian's
Russians are very cool little tortoises, I want to get one soon if I can convince my wife to let me get one. I may buy one at NARBC and then ask for forgiveness if she gets upset.

Re: Russian's
it's always way easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission!
PS- David (Jumper) has a great little CBB Russian for sale right now....there is NO WAY your wife wouldn't love that cute little thing!

Oh boy! I just can't wait to get married! lol
The battle for herps never ends does it?
I am just excited to get out of my parents' house so I don't have to have all these rules about "how many I can keep", but that same struggle comes back once married I guess!

No problem.
Just get you a "herper" wife.
Tell anyone you date, that if she wishes the relationship
to continue she must be a "herper".

Or just don't give her too much information like retics get really big etc cause speaking from experience they will take that information and use it against you. Trust me.Snakeman wrote:No problem.

Haha! The ONLY problem with your idea Larry is that we'd probably be "out of control" with buying herps (that is if she is anything like I am with wanting herps)! lol
Zak, I have made that mistake with my parents! I thought it was fun to educate my parents about herps, and they used what they learned (usually about size and aggression) against me.

Re: Russian's
just do what i did (like Larry suggested). i told Monica when we first met what i liked and what i wanted to do. i had only a single BP at the time and told her i would get more breed them. i also told her i was going to have BIG ones and breed them also. gotta get things straight from the beginning!
Re: Russian's
I just tell myself its not like she's gonna divorce me over this .... hopefully she won't. Nah she's getting better and I think most women in general would be cool with it. I never saw myself being married to anyone that was affraid or thought snakes were slimey.

Re: Russian's
I lucked out. I married a herp-tolerant husband. He thinks nothing of moving bags, the weird things that might be in my purse, spider jars on the bar, or the big boa soaking in the bathtub. He has also brought me an injured snake or two. I think he's a keeper.
I don't know if I've told you or not, but I did win a "What's the weirdest thing in your purse contest?" once at some girly party. They were not impressed that the beautiful distressed leather case contained a snake bag and hook. I tried to tell them that it was fashionable AND functional.

Re: Russian's
You have told me that Tandy and I think it's so cool.
I've shared it with several other herpers from time to time.
No woman should be without a snake hook and a snake bag.

Re: Russian's
Cameron, I showed my wife your pics of the outside pen for Russians and she thought it was really cool and even mentioned that she would like it if I did something like that in our backyard.

Bryan, that would be awesome. I can't say enough how awesome Russian tortoises are. Also, our Oklahoma weather is perfect for them to stay outdoors year round. If you get some, you won't regret it!
