NOTE: OCHIS RATTLESNAKE ROUNDUP POSITION STATEMENT

The Oklahoma City Herpetological & Invertebrate Society (OCHIS) does not condone
traditional rattlesnake round ups where snakes are needlessly showcased and typically
housed in overcrowded, stressful conditions.

Although we recognize most rattlesnake species as legitimate game species harvested for meat and hides, it seems to be an afterthought in the overall roundup experience.
Whereas the showcasing, including head pinning and showing the fangs, encouraging
defensive reactions for shock value and instilling fear rather than educating people about the role rattlesnakes play in our environment only serve to encourage peoples’ fear and disgust for a truly remarkable animal.

We are pleased to know that several long-time rattlesnake roundups across the country have changed their venue from a traditional round up to a vital educational experience for all that attend and the once common and incredibly cruel, painful practice of defanging/removing venom glands is falling out of favor.

Many see rattlesnakes as “mean” until they understand the natural defenses at work as the snake tries to defend itself from a human handler it perceives as a predator, and in turn, it’s fighting for its life whether the human handler has the intent to kill or not.

ENFORCEMENT) ; (405) 522-0871.

22.)
Q: IF YOU'RE GOING TO KEEP VENOMOUS REPTILES, DO THEY REQUIRE SPECIAL
CAGING ?

A: YES. A VENOMOUS REPTILE MUST "BE KEPT IN A SOLID ENCLOSURE THAT IS
STRUCTURALLY SOUND SO THAT IT RESTRICTS ACCESS AND CONTAINS THE
ANIMAL. ANY VENTILATION PORTS SHALL BE CONSTRUCTED OF A DOUBLE
LAYER OF FINE MESH SCREEN OR A SIMILAR SUITABLE MATERIAL FIRMLY
