adults, yes. they males will have a much longer tail than the females. that's probably the easiest way. i don't think that anal scutes play into that as much as tortoises, but i may be wrong. easiest way is tail length though.

Zak,

To add a little to what Cameron said, with both Cooters and Sliders, adult males have really long nails on their forelimbs and their shells are flat compared with the well-arched shells of the females.

Long nails won't happen until they get a little older. Hatchling turtles are difficult, but the easiest way would be the tail length and position of the cloaca in relation to the edge of the carapace. If the cloaca is even with or under the carapace, it's a female. In males, the cloaca is position well beyond the edge of the carapace.
