Re: OCHIS 2013 Program Calendar
I have discussed doing the October meeting program with Larry and am trying to come up with a good topic that is new.
Pat suggested NW OK herps.
Some I have thought of include: an update of the conservation status of the Texas Horned Lizard, an overview of the impact of road deaths on herps (a topic I would love to do a thesis over if the opp ever comes up), W. Slender Glass Lizards, some public speaking/overcoming the fear tips for those who do/want to education programs, keying out a specimen, others?
Thanks for any suggestions.

Still trying to decide on a topic for the October Zoo meeting presentation. Any other suggestions? Or please vote for one already listed. The majority rules

I vote for "Keying Out a Specimen" or "Northwest Oklahoma Herps".
Both sound great to me.

Ditto.

Ok...
What is "Keying out a specimen", the phrase isn't registering in my little brain.

Re: OCHIS 2013 Program Calendar
A dichot key is a road map for identifying an animal. Some will start very simply like determining if it's a snake, mammal, fish, etc. then by process of elimination "key it out" to genus and maybe down to species. For example, I pick up what I think is a snake and the first question on my key is "Are legs present/absent?" Then hair present/absent? Then maybe "Are eyelids present or or absent?" I quickly determine that it's a legless lizard and then it will ask for other characteristics (most do not use color unless there is a color characteristic that is always present and that doesn't happen very often but one example that comes to mind is the collar on the E. Collared Lizard) such as scalation, ear openings/lack of ear openings, tail/no tail, etc. A key will give one or more options per "question" and then guide you per your responses regarding the animal. Some keys are very simple and designed for the novice to determine the kind of animal and some are very complex and may require magnification of the animal or plant to determine characteristics depending on the user and the purpose.

Re: OCHIS 2013 Program Calendar
I've had some good responses to "Keying out a Specimen," so I guess that will be my topic for the October program. I will cover the basics that will apply to most people and if we want to go further, then we can do that also. Thanks for the responses. Of course, I will cover natives too
.

I have an out-of-town speaker who would like to come in April or at the latest, May. He would also like to do some field herping while he is here. Thanks.

Re: OCHIS 2013 Program Calendar
Alice,
I'll need his name, what he wants to speak on and how to get in touch with
him.
If there will be no cost to OCHIS, I can set it up without a vote by the membership.
If there will be any cost, the membership will have to vote on it.
It will be great if he can go herping with us also.
