Tiger Rumps

Post  gatsu7 on Sun Apr 03, 2011 8:26 pm

My biggest Costa Rican Tiger Rump molted into a mature male a couple of weeks ago. I gave him to Jim Burns to breed with his BIG female in return for half of the babies. Jim said that my little dude managed to breed with her multiple times before becoming dinner. For those who don't know, when a tarantula molts into a mature male, they only have a couple of months to live on average, and their sole goal in life at that point is to breed, and then the female usually eats them, so while I'm sad to lose the spider, at least I know that he died having fulfilled his purpose.
Anyway, we should know in a few weeks if the breeding took, and I might have a BUNCH of baby tiger rumps sometime later this year. Last year, this female had about 750 babies, so I may end up with around 350. I don't know what I will do with all of them, but it should be an interesting experience. Wish us luck!
