I'm curious--in one of your videos, you said the two tegus eat about the same amount and are about the same age. Why the size difference? Do you think some environmental factor may be stressing the smaller one and affecting its growth? Or do you suspect something else is contributing to the differential growth rates?

Sandy,
My larger tegu did not hibernate through the winter and the all american hibernated for over 4 months. Hence the size difference.

Ah-Hah! That would definitely make a difference! Now . . . I wonder why one hibernated and the other didn't if they were being kept in the same enclosure? Or did you do something to ensure that one hibernated?

Also, in this species, is hibernation necessary to prepare them for breeding?

Tegus in captivity usually hibernate but some don't and unlike other animals that hibernate not much is known about what triggers it. Controlling temperature and light generally makes no impact as to wether or not a tegu chooses to hibernate.

There is alot of speculation out hibernation being necessary for breeding, but it is not proven to hinder an animals breeding chances if they don't hibernate.

OK, I see. So one of your guys went into hibernation but the other didn't.

I love that there is still so much to explore about so many different animals and aspects of the world. And it seems that for every new piece of information we gain, more questions arise. Isn't the world wonderful?
