Dubia Roaches! (Echo?)

Post  thebluejackal on Mon Feb 27, 2012 8:27 pm

I would looooove to find some locally rather than shipping 'em in.

Anyone have more than they know what to do with?

I'd like a mix of 100+ to start a colony so I can feed off the nymphs to my cresteds.

I'd be more than happy to hand off any surplus adults (especially males) to any beardie owners who'd like some extra.

Thanks for the roaches!

Not only are they giving my geckos some awesome protein, they're helping me get over my roach heebie jeebies. Nothing else creeps me out this much! I love spiders, scorpions, (jumping spiders and huntsman spiders are my favorites), but roaches for some reason . . . XD

I can handle the nymphs and females just fine because they remind me of small hissers, but those males . . . I am such a wuss. BUT I PICKED THEM UP!

Fed some tonight and two of my juvies had devoured theirs not ten minutes after I put them in. One of my adult girls was all into them, but then decided to eat some CGD instead. >.>

Boy, can I relate!! The ONLY critter for which I have a phobia is cockroaches! UGH! My kids always thought it was funny that I could pick up anything except a roach; I can't even stand to be in the same room with one.

So you think the cure is to start raising them? Not sure I can go there . . . Exclamation

It's not like I scream and run away . . . but if they skitter, I jump. ANY other animal, I don't care if it's a fast moving lizard (I have one flighty gecko out of my six, the other five are super chill) or a jumping mouse, I remain calm and can handle them confidently. Skittering spiders don't even freak me out. Not even brown recluses, black widows, or anything else I recognize as being particularly venomous.

I probably sat and stared at the moving insides of the box for a good five minutes before carefully removing the cardboard, grabbing a deli cup, and scooping them out one by one.

They're now happily in my roach bin. I dumped some stale CGD in there and placed in a few bottle caps of more that my geckos didn't finish and it was ALL GONE by this morning.

Gonna go see if Britton Feeds has hen laying mash. XD

In any case, three of my four juvies were sitting in their bowls this morning wondering if more would appear.

Well, unless I have some forewarning, I DO scream and run away! ACK! Embarassed

I'm glad your juvies are happy, though! And it seems that we are going to have to do something about finding a source of roaches or raising them, as we are receiving some fire-bellied toads from a friend who is no longer able to care for his (he has very aggressive leukemia). The Snakeman says roaches are good food for the toads. *sigh*
