I am totally STUPID! Python escape.

Post  Chu'Wuti on Thu Feb 09, 2012 5:39 am

Got up this morning to discover that the screen top on the cinnamon python's tank was open over an inch. The cinnamon was gone. ARRRRHGGHGGHGH!!!! Evil or Very Mad

Last night was feeding night, and I was grading while I was feeding. After all these years of snake-keeping, being absolutely paranoid about latching enclosures properly, double- and triple-checking to ensure that things are closed up tight so no one can escape, I FAILED to make sure on the cinnamon python's tank--only on his.

He's a funny eater--he "kills" his prey, then puts it down and investigates it thoroughly, as if he's trying to decide whether he should eat it or not. This "thinking about it" process can go on for quite a long time--15-30 minutes--and I usually come back and check on him several times to find out whether he has eaten or I should remove the rat. Last night I forgot. And I forgot to latch his enclosure.

I am feeling sooooo STUPID! Embarassed

The problem with an escape right now in our house is that we are remodeling. The snakes recently got moved into the kitchen from another part of the house, but the kitchen isn't finished--under the table holding snake tanks, the floor has an unfinished section with holes going through. I thought these led into the crawl space under the house, but my DH says it is now all closed off by insulation and the screening holding the insulation up. Still . . . snakes are VERY GOOD at finding the smallest hole or crevice through which they can crawl . . . he might be able to get under the house? pale

I am really tired of the remodeling--the mess, the having to move snakes from one place to another to yet another, having to ask others to take care of snakes for me, having to live amongst boxes and debris . . .

and I am EXTREMELY UPSET WITH MYSELF for not taking care to close the latches!!

Just venting. Keep your fingers crossed . . . Sandy

Sandy,

I'm really sorry to hear that.

Escapes can be soooooooooooooooo frustrating.

I really hope he shows up.

I hope so too, but I'm not hopeful, if you know what I mean.

On another note, the pair of babies I have are eating really well . . .

That's great !

# 3 has now eaten 4 times.

I'm hoping # 2 will eat for the second time today.

OMG! He reappeared!!!!!

Post  Chu'Wuti on Thu Feb 09, 2012 7:27 pm

I've been sitting in the front room grading and decided I would go set up a heating pad with a hide on the floor near the holes to see if that might entice the cinnamon out of hiding. When I walked into the dining room, the dogs were acting kind of weird. Kanga stood up and greeted me, but then she turned away and looked at the hallway. Merah was lying in front of the doorway into the hallway; both dogs appeared to be watching something. So I looked, and there, on the floor at the bottom of the stairs, was the cinnamon, drawn up in a self-defensive strike position!!

I picked him up--slowly, as he was a little skittish--and inspected him. Other than a streak across his head that looks like a minor scrape--it only appears as a white mark, he is fine. bounce

WHEW!

Truthfully, I am amazed. I really did not expect to see him alive again.

I will not leave enclosures unlatched again!!!

I've done the same thing before. I found my snake curled up right out side of my snake room. Glad you found yours.

I'm not only very glad I found him, but I'm also especially glad I found him alive and unharmed! We have two cats, and cats are very good at killing snakes! Shocked

Maybe the dogs guarding him prevented the cats from getting him. Cool

Right now the python is investigating the screen top very closely. Sorry, guy--I'm not making the same mistake twice if I can prevent it!!!! Stay in that tank!

Many times the critter will be found within a few days. My dog, Lucy, was really good at pointing out a tortoise if one had escaped the outside pen. And usually within 24 hrs. a frog can be seen calmly sitting on a ledge near their tank. One of my salamanders was caught running across the carpet, lint, cat hair and all. Put out a shallow pan of water, a heating pad and even a mouse in a small trap and wait.

Glad you found your snake. I think it's the worst feeling for the first day.

Yeah, I know what you mean, Alice. I think after the first day, one becomes resigned to the possibility of a permanent loss and to the possibility of finding--or smelling!!--a dead critter sometime in the future. I am very fortunate that I didn't have to experience that.

The cinnamon is absolutely positive that there's still a way out of his tank--he has checked every millimeter of the screen top all the way around!

Very Happy

Hope you are doing well!

Sandy

You and me both!! I was feeling horrible about losing your baby! (Not so much of a baby anymore, despite his lengthy investigations of his food!)

He's holed up in his hide today. I guess he finally gave up on searching for the way out!
