I know several folks here that keep or are interested in rat snakes. What is your favorite species and what do you like about them? I'm curious since I deal mainly with our native Texas Rats (I know they're not in OK, LOL), Black Rats & Intergrades, and the Great Plains Rats. I am particularly fond of the Texas Rats just because they're so fiesty (many resources say ill-tempered). I also enjoy finding the Black Rat intergrades because they're like snowflakes-no two are alike.

Tandy,

Cameron Hodges will go nuts when he sees your post/question.

Be prepared for a lengthy reply. Laughing

Personally, I have three favorites.

* Corn Snakes (aka Red Rat Snakes)

* Everglades Rat Snakes

* Trans - Pecos Rat Snakes

I've kept or am keeping all three species and they are all great pet snakes.

Corns (except for a couple of morphs) and Trans - Pecos Rat Snakes are also great

program snakes.

I really dig the great plains rats--I think they're a neat find in the field and not bad pets.

I like texas rats...interesting body shape, and attitude isn't *too* horrible.

And my favorite? A good yellow rat. Wowser. I'm restricting this to new world rats; if you want to include old world? My chinese king rats are my favorites, hands down. Awesome snakes.

That's great and I'll be waiting to hear from Cameron. Does anyone have any breeding projects in the works?

Larry, you know I'm not into morphs but you mentioned that a couple of the corn morphs don't work well for programs. Is it like everything else, breeding for color and maybe not so much for temperament? Several dog breeds come to mind. Laughing

I know of no other species of snake that can compete with corns in the number of

morphs.

Check out: http://www.cornsnake.net/photo-gallery.html

There seems to be a color and/or pattern for everyone.

Because of my research and discussions with a couple of breeders who are very

knowledgeable when it comes to corn snakes, I've never kept these morphs/hybrids,

so I'm not speaking from personal experience, but there seems to be a temperament

problem with Bloodred Corns and Jungle Corns.

However, with Jungle Corns, you're bringing in "outside genetic factor(s)" from the

California Kingsnake and creating a fertile hybrid.

There may be some other morphs/hybrids that have temperament issues also, but if

so, I'm not aware of them.

Black Rats are the only Pantherophis (or Elaphe for us old school types) native to my area, and I do enjoy keeping one around, if anything, to share with the kids or even a scout group.

In my household I've got the ball pythons and carpet pythons, but the girlfriend has been somehow growing her collection of rat snakes. So far it consists of:
0.1 Trans-peco
1.0 Luesistic Gray
1.0 Ghost Emory
1.0 louisanna Gray
2.1 Colorado Gray
0.1 Amelanistic Emory
1.1 Vietamese Blue Beauty
0.1 Tiawenese Blue Beauty
I'm slowly getting over run because the wish list has been given to me for this year lol.

Larry, you were correct... lol (sorry about my long absence though. I have been very busy)

Tandy, "ratsnakes" are my absolute favorite snakes! They are extremely variable, they are generally hardy good candidates for snakes to keep and breed in captivity, many of them are quite uncommon in the hobby, and they are usually very active and fascinating!

Here are some pics I have of most of the ones in my collection:

Asian Rat Snakes:

Red Tailed Green Rat Snakes (Gonyosoma oxycephalum)
Rat Snakes Ratsna11
This is Eden, my 2009 CBB female.

Rat Snakes Ratsna12
Silver Bullet, my WC gray phased female from Java, Indonesia.

Rat Snakes Ratsna13
And this is Kermit, my WC male also from Java, Indonesia.

Beauty Snakes (Orthriophis taeniura ssp.)
Rat Snakes Ratsna14
Sapphire, my 2010 CBB female Blue Beauty Snake (O. t. callicyanous).

My baby female Blue Beauty Snake (Orthiophis taeniura callicyanous)

Broad Banded Bamboo Ratsnakes (Oreocryptophis porphyraceus laticinctus)!
Rat Snakes Newstu10
Here is the male (he is about three months old now).

Rat Snakes Newstu11
And here is the female (she was only about 3 weeks old when this pic was taken).

Trinket Ratsnakes (Coelognathus h. helena), Rat Snakes Newstu16

American Rat Snakes:
Pantherophis obsoletus ssp:
Rat Snakes Ratsna18

Rat Snakes Ratsna19
My WC (probably a 2009) Black Rat Snake (P. o. obsoletus)

Rat Snakes Ratsna20
My WC (probably a 2010) Texas X Black Rat Snake intergrade (P. o. lindheimeri x P. o. obsoletus).

Corn Snakes (Pantherophis guttatus)

Bogertophis subocularis:

Rat Snakes Ratsna24
My sister's male 2009 Trans Pecos Rat Snake.

Mexican Night Snakes (Pseudelaphe f. flavirufa), which are my sister's, but I thought I would post them too! Smile

The female (het anerythristic).

Tiger Ratsnake (Spilotes pullatus)
Rat Snakes Christ17
Although, these are not really considered "true ratsnakes" because they were never previously placed in the genus Elaphe...
Rat Snakes Christ18

Anyways, I hope you enjoy the pics of the wide variety of 'em. There are soooooo many more out there though!

-Oh, and my pair of Rhino Ratsnakes (Rhynchophis boulengeri), and Red Thai Bamboo Ratsnakes (Oreocryptophis porphyraceus coxi) should be coming in pretty soon!!!! Very Happy

Forgive the slacker Cameron. Awesome pics! I am considering venturing further into the ratsnakes. I get to deal with so many native specimens that they've grown on me over the years-well except the large adult corn that had to poop down my pant leg every single time I handled him. I was starting to take it personally. I don't know why I called him "Turd." Laughing

Thanks Tandy! I have also many of the native ratsnakes over the years (ie. Great Plains Ratsnakes, Black Ratsnakes, and Texas x Black Rat intergrades). They are all fun, and I very much regret getting rid of my Great Plains Rat a few years ago... I think you would very much enjoy some of the other ratsnakes species!
I personally enjoy the more exotic, larger, and more arboreal species of colubrids best!

OK, I'm in love with Eden and Kermit! What gorgeous snakes, Cameron! All of them are beautiful. Yet, for some reason, green snakes of any species really appeal to me, even though I currently don't have any. I used to have Rough Green Snakes, but they are a challenge to keep. Maybe I need to get some rat snakes sometime--IN THE FUTURE WHEN THE REMODELING IS DONE!!!
