Custom Snake Rack System Finished!

Post  snakefreak on Tue Aug 09, 2011 6:52 pm

Well, my dad and I just finished my new snake rack! It turned out really nice and HUGE! The shelves are made out of melamine, the sides are 3/4'' plywood (painted white), and the back is 1/4'' plywood. We used 3'' Flex Watt Heat tape running along the back all hooked up to a thermostat. It is also on 3'' casters because it is really heavy, but we built it in a way that it is VERY sturdy and will probably last my entire life (with dividers and shelving cleats to add extra support)! Very Happy Anyways, it holds a total of twenty 28 quart Sterilite tubs (10 levels with 2 tubs on each level).

I am also working on a video on how to build such a snake rack, and I will post it if anybody is interested, but it looks like it is gonna be around like 25-30 minuets long! Shocked

Here's some pics:

That is a sharp looking rack! you said flexwatt along the back.Do you mean bottom of the tubs towards the back or the actual back of the tubs?

P.s. dont forget your air holes! =P

Thanks everyone!

Yeah, I mean that the flexwatt runs under the tubs; towards the back. Oh, and air holes are already drilled for added ventilation. You can see them in the pic.

Zak, it probably took like six or seven whole days to do once all the time was added up (but we spread it out over a series of weekends). It would have also gone quicker if we used all melamine. We used plywood for the sides, back, and base. This took longer since I had to prime and then paint two or three layers of actual paint on both sides of each board... I will see about putting the video up (if I can even figure out how Laughing ).

Id like to see it! Id suggest one more set of casters in the middle, then after a few years it wont sag in the middle. But looks pretty solid and very pretty! My snakes wouldn't be allowed to poop in that thing!

Thanks, I will definitely look into adding another set of casters. The base is 3/4'' plywood with 2x4s framing the edges, and then another 2x4 going down the middle (from left to right, not front to back though) (but of coarse you can't see that from these pics).
